Fibre optics productsNear infrared light (NIR) can be sent long distances in a fibre optic cable. This is because the fibre (step-index fibre) is composed of a core and outer layer which have different refractive indexes.
This structure means that light is reflected internally at the boundary of the 2 layers. Light is attenuated only at input and output of the fibre and is minimally absorbed in the fibre material.
